The MAN 8 series was first introduced in 1979 as a joint venture between MAN and VW. A production model was shown in 1983. Production was shared between the MAN factory in Salzgitter-Watenstedt and the VW factory in Hannover. From 1986 until 1993 when production of the MAN 8 was shut down, manufacturing took place by MAN only.
